LEER HOLSTEIN SHOW - GERMANY 2005

After two days of touring farms and seeing daughters of specific bulls, we spent the middle of our trip in Lear at a State Holstein Show.  On Tuesday evening we went to the banquet, where we ate the ever popular Wiener schnitzel which is actually a piece of chicken fried pork with no wieners in sight. We attended the show the following day. This gave us a chance to see many quality animals in the barns and in the show ring. We saw daughters of European and North American sires all under the same roof, being raised and managed under the same conditions. I was pleasantly surprised to find the cattle sired by the German bulls to be of the same quality as the cattle sired by the most popular American and Canadian bulls. It was a REAL eye opener!!!! I guess it shouldn’t have come as such a big surprise, because the German’s have purchased the best genetics available in North America for their genetic base and taken them back to the birth place of the Holstein breed, Germany and in particular the German states of Holstein and Friesian.

The class winners and champions at this show could be very competitive at similar state Holstein shows in the United States.

 Bill Tester - Vermont

The tour traveled to the Excellent Show in the birthplace of the Holstein breed, Leer, East Friesland.  Grand champion honors were claimed by a nine-year-old cow, Tilma (EX-94), sired by the Italian Starbuck son, Bookie.  Shown here are the Excalibur representatives with Tilma.
